14 Job Interview Questions You Should Be Asking

14 Job Interview Questions You Should Be Asking

question mark girlFourteen Job Interview Questions you should be asking if you want to stand out from other candidates.

An interview isn’t just a one way conversation, you too need to ask questions to the interviewer. By doing so, the interview will result in an excellent interview that results in a job offer, and that is why you should ask questions.

I’ve put together a starting list of great questions to ask your interviewer. Weave some of these questions into the conversation (don’t ask them all at once) and you will have a fantastic job interview.

Questions That Give You Better Answers To Their Questions

  • What would an ideal candidate for this job look like?
  • Tell me about your most successful employee.
  • What tasks will define success for this job?
  • What would sink an employee in this position?

What they say in response to these types of questions will tell you what they consider important. This knowledge will help you deliver better, more tailored answers to their questions.

Questions That Help You Know If You Want the Job

  • What’s a typical work day like?
  • What do you like or dislike the most about working for this company?
  • What are your biggest goals over the next year or two?
  • What happened to the last person who was in this position? (You want to know if they were promoted or fired and why that happened.)

You need to know if this job will be a good fit and if it will help you grow and advance your career.

Questions That Turn the Interview Into a Conversation

  • Do you agree?
  • Did I answer your question?
  • Would you like to hear more about that?

These kinds of questions that get them to respond to you help you establish rapport, and they help you know if you are on the right track. They also make you seem more confident.

(An outstanding way to turn the interview into a professional conversation that gets you hired is to bring a 30-60-90-Day Plan. Even if it isn’t perfect, the conversation will be miles ahead of what other candidates are doing.)

Questions That Uncover Doubts They Have About You

  • Can you see me being very successful in this role?
  • Do you see any reason you wouldn’t move me forward in this process?
  • Is there any reason you wouldn’t hire me?

Try to find out what they think of you as a candidate while you are still in the interview. If they have any doubts about you, the best time to overcome them is while you are there speaking with them. Sometimes the doubt is something you can’t do anything about, but often it’s a result of a miscommunication or misconception–and that is something you can correct to save the offer.

If you have trouble asking questions in interviews, find an interview coach to role-play the interview with you . It’s worth it if it increases your confidence and gives you a smoother, more successful interview.

3 of the Toughest Job Interview Questions!

Tell me about yourself? – Some people think this is an icebreaker question because it’s one of the first things they ask you in the interview (and because in normal circumstances, it is an icebreaker question). So they answer it like they would in a social situation and say something like. That’s a mistake. It’s the wrong response because that’s not what this question is about.

When they say, “Tell me about yourself,” what they really want to know is “Tell me something that will matter to me as I consider you for this job.”

Why did you leave your last job? – It’s important that you don’t say anything negative about the company you were with because any negativity reflects very badly on you—but you still have to give them a reason why you’re no longer with that company. Your answer will depend on what happened, but there are ways you can talk about it to put a positive spin on it.

Why do you want to join this company? – Many hiring managers are suspicious that you don’t especially want a job working for them…you just want any job so you can collect a paycheck. This is another risk issue for them.

This question is another place where your research will reward you. Answer the question and give specific examples to back it up. Your answer should sound like, “I want to join this company because…” and then you need to list at least 3 reasons why.

– Are You Prepared For Your Next Interview?

Tough IQA

What is your ideal job?

In a personality test, this question may not be so easy for you to answer. But in a job interview, it’s one of the easiest questions you’ll be asked – The Answer of course is – This one.

As far as they are concerned, your ideal job is the one you’re interviewing for right now.

In asking this question, your interviewer is trying to find out if you’ll be happy and productive in this position, with this company, or if you just want anything with a paycheck. So it’s a little bit like answering the question, “Why do you want to work here?” They want to know that it’s about more than the money.

This is yet another place where the company research you do before the interview will benefit you. If you’ve done your job interview prep right, you can add those elements that make it clear that you are interested in this job, with this company.

Are you overqualified for this job?

If you get asked this question in your job interview, you may jump straight to frustrated—especially if you’re an older worker and assume they’re telling you you’re just too old. But companies facing hiring issues really don’t want to make a mistake. They don’t want to go to the time and expense of hiring someone who will just move on to something that pays more as soon as they find it. Most people want to climb the ladder and make more money, so why wouldn’t you?

So when they ask you if you have too much experience, think about the question behind the question. What they’re really asking is, are you going to be bored? Is this really the right position for you? Are you really going to be satisfied here? Drill down a little more and it’s: Are you a fit for this job? – Are you willing to relocate?

Are you willing to move for your job?

In many companies, this is a typical job interview question. Sometimes it’s a deal-breaker, sometimes it isn’t. Even if this particular job doesn’t require it, many companies want that flexibility in their employees for long-term growth potential.

The knee-jerk answer that most people give (“I’d consider it for the right opportunity.”) is not your best answer. Even if it is the truth. Because it puts your motivation for wanting the job more into the ‘money’ category rather than the ‘fulfilling work / great fit’ category. It’s a subtle but important distinction, and it will take the shine off your candidacy if you say it.

What To Do Next

What we covered is just 3 of many questions you most have the right answer too in your interviews if you want that job offer.

If you are not prepared to answer the perfect interview questions, your chances of getting that job offer is low. It’s frustrating to go from one interview after another and not knowing why you are not getting any job offers. Now here’s your chance to turn all that around.
